The four things that decide whether a bike day works.
Distance is the least of it. What sinks a booking is a gradient nobody mentioned, a minimum age that rules out the eight-year-old, three hours in a saddle you have not sat on for a decade, or a self-guided route that assumes you can read a GPS unit in the rain. In northern Vietnam the paths between the paddies are a foot wide and dead flat, and they stop dead at the water. So the bikes go on the boat. You pedal a village loop, hand the bicycle to a rower, cross under the limestone, and pick it up on the far bank to ride out. Nobody walks this route because nobody could carry the distance; nobody drives it because there is no road.

Riding Through the Compound
